There have been squibs in the magical world for as long as anyone could remember; people born to magical families without inheriting the magical capabilities. However, in recent years, the ministry has noticed that there has been an influx of squibs – a cause for alarm, as far as the Minister for Magic was concerned. Immediately, a study was started – of squibs, their DNA, and their biological makeup. It was quickly determined that those with a pureblood background were more likely to be squibs – that those in highly regarded pureblood circles were the families turning out more squib children than those who were halfbloods or muggleborns.
Quickly, a meeting was called, and solutions were proposed. Among them was a highly debated and very controversial solution; that purebloods were no longer legally allowed to marry other purebloods. It is because of this law that all students are to be paired off based on blood status – whether they like it or not.
